Green Charter Speech & Debate Competition Categories:

Here’s a brief summary of the requested NSDA competition categories we will be coaching this year:

1. Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate

  • Format: One-on-one debate focusing on values, aimed at beginners.

  • Duration: 6-minute speeches, with shorter prep time.

  • Topic: Pre-determined resolutions to discuss ethical and moral issues.

2. Lincoln-Douglas Debate

  • Format: One-on-one, value-based debate.

  • Duration: 6-minute constructive speeches, 3-minute rebuttals, and 3-minute cross-examinations.

  • Topic: Resolutions focused on ethics and philosophical issues.

3. Novice Reading

  • Format: Performances of prose or poetry by beginners.

  • Duration: Typically 5-7 minutes.

  • Focus: Emphasizes clarity, emotion, and expressive reading from a written piece.

4. Children's Literature

  • Format: Performance of literature written for children.

  • Duration: 5-7 minutes.

  • Focus: Engaging and expressive delivery aimed at younger audiences.

5. Declamation

  • Format: Recitation of a famous speech or an excerpt from a historical figure or public address.

  • Duration: 6-10 minutes.

  • Focus: Delivery and interpretation of existing works.

6. Expository Speaking

  • Format: Informative speech explaining a topic or concept.

  • Duration: 6-8 minutes.

  • Focus: Clear explanation, structure, and visual aids.

7. Impromptu Speaking

  • Format: A speech delivered with minimal preparation time (usually 7 minutes total: 2 minutes prep, 5 minutes speaking).

  • Focus: Quick thinking and effective delivery on a randomly assigned topic (usually from current events).

8. Informative Speaking

  • Format: A speech aimed at educating the audience on a specific topic.

  • Duration: 8-10 minutes.

  • Focus: Clarity, structure, and depth of knowledge on the subject.

9. Original Oratory

  • Format: A self-written and delivered speech, usually persuasive.

  • Duration: 10 minutes.

  • Focus: Strong argumentation, clarity, and compelling delivery on a social or political issue.

10. Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Format: A speech on a current event with limited preparation time (30 minutes).

  • Duration: 7 minutes.

  • Focus: Quick, thoughtful responses to timely topics.

11. Dramatic Interpretation

  • Format: Performance of a dramatic monologue or scene.

  • Duration: 8-10 minutes.

  • Focus: Emotional depth, character development, and storytelling through performance.

12. Humorous Interpretation

  • Format: A comedic performance of a piece, often involving multiple characters.

  • Duration: 8-10 minutes.

  • Focus: Comedy, timing, and expressive delivery.

13. Poetry/Prose

  • Format: Performance of either poetry or prose.

  • Duration: 8-10 minutes.

  • Focus: Expressive interpretation and emotional connection with the piece.

them in any category they choose.
